The WGA will hand out awards this Saturday, but not to True Detective.

Another award, another opportunity to pass over True Detective. Such is life. The WGA (Writer’s Guild of America) has, in the past, nominated True Detective. In fact, the first season was able to win at the WGA’s last yearTrue Detective wasn’t nominated this time around, but Fargo was. So there’s that.

Writing was perhaps season’s two’s largest, most obvious failure. When taken into consideration in that light, this particular situation doesn’t feel like a snub. It feels fair. Season two had great performances that were worth celebrating and sometimes fantastic art direction. It’s writing, however, wasn’t always up to snuff. At least we now know why.

Fargo‘s second season, which did bring its A game this season, is nominated. While it was airing it felt like Fargo would be a shoe-in for awards, but that hasn’t been the case. Fargo is experiencing what True Detective’s first season did — an almost constant stream of snubs.

All the usual drama favorites are nominated, including Game of Thrones, Mad Men, and House of Cards. Newcomer and True Detective adjacent show, Mr. Robot, is nominated in two categories. Fargo only has one shot at the award and it has been regulated to the Adapted Long Form category, separate form the other aforementioned shows.

Next: Don't expect True Detective season three to change the basics.

Fargo’s nomination is well-served, and we’ll be rooting for it in True Detective’s stead. This is one area in which True Detective just wasn’t able to compete with the others.
