Portlandia Had Fun with True Detective Last Night

Last night’s new episode of Portlandia spoke hard truths about True Detective and similar shows.

Portlandia is the oddball IFC series that seems too weird to succeed and find mainstream appeal, and yet it has. Carrie Brownstein, lead guitarist and co-songwriter of the fantastic Sleater-Kinney has been propelled to stardom because of it. And Fred Armisen, is, well, Fred Armisen.

Portlandia continued its sixth season last night in an episode called “Weirdo Beach,” and though there wasn’t a True Detective specific skit or storyline to follow, it did worm its way into the opening. To kick things off Carrie and Fred introduced the band BWOW, an outfit that is responsible for creating songs for various dramatic series.

While going over “Far From Any Road” from True Detective’s first season, it becomes painfully obvious that the opening songs from dramas such as True BloodRay Donavon, and even True Detective all sound mostly the same. A pinch of dark blues, some slide guitar, and you’ve got the gist. It’s a weird realization.

Unfortunately a clip of this specific skit has not made its way online yet, and Portlandia isn’t a fan of putting specific clips online like SNL is. IFC has instead chosen to promote a different part of the episode featuring The Misfit’s Glenn Danzig. While worthy, Danzig is not the reason we are here today.

Next: Is the secrecy surrounding True Detective deserved?

Those that are able are encouraged to watch the episode on IFC’s official site, which is unfortunately only supported by some cable providers. Not cool, guys.
