Let’s face facts. Jon Snow died at the end of season five. But let’s also face the fact that he will be returning at some point in season six. It’s really only a question of how.
The insistence of the cast, crew and writers that Jon Snow was definitely, certainly, irrevocably dead has had fans confused ever since that little snot Olly plunged his dagger into the Lord Commander’s chest, and with good reason. How could he just be dead? He’s too pivotal a character in the overall story to simply disappear. We never even found out who his mother was!
But before we start planning the funeral, let’s remember that resurrection actually requires death. Were Jon to simply survive the attack by his Night’s Watch brothers, he’d probably spend the rest of the season convalescing in his bed. That’s too boring for our hero. Better that he truly die, so he can be reborn as Jon 2.0, and ascend to his destined role as the savior of the realm. Or something like that. And don’t forget, Melisandre returned to the Wall just in time for Jon’s murder. That’s the same Melisandre who learned about the Red God’s power of resurrection from Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr back in season three.
However it happens, it’s sure to be one of the most-watched television events in history. Here’s hoping that while they were planning this soon-to-be ten month campaign of lies, disinformation and teases, someone took the time to make sure that the payoff at the end of the game will be worth all the time we spent playing.
Season six of Game of Thrones premieres April 24 on HBO.
