The Independent Spirit Awards paid tribute to Spotlight and ended Cary Fukunaga’s losing streak.

The Independent Spirit Awards offer up something of an alternative to the Oscars. The Spirit Awards are generally more open to indie movies, and although there is sometimes some overlap, their winners frequently differ from both the Oscars and Golden Globes. The 2016 show was yesterday, and both Spotlight and Beasts of no Nation came out ahead.

Spotlight is the talk of the town, so it makes sense for it to continue its winning streak. Spotlight won both Beast FeatureBest Director, and Best Editing. Spotlight also took home the great honor of the night, the Robert Altman Award.

The first two were the big awards of the night, but Beasts of no Nation was still able to pull in some wins for Best Male Lead and Best Supporting Male — Idris Elba has previously won in this category at the SAG’s.

Rachel McAdams was not nominated, so it will be all or nothing for her tonight at the Oscars. It’s nice to finally see some love for Beasts of no Nation, Cary Fukunaga himself still hasn’t won a single award. With Spotlight and The Revenant consistently dominating it has been a tough field even without the potential studio politics.

Next: Matthew McConaughey doesn't know anything about season three.

Cary Fukunaga’s awards race is now over — the Oscars snubbed Beasts of no Nation in every category. At least we won’t have to wait much longer to find out if Rachel McAdams will score her first Oscar.
