Cary Fukunaga’s The Alienist May Have Found its Lead
Cary Fukunaga’s new series for TNT is in the middle of casting, and the lead may have been found.
There’s something really exciting about the prospect of Cary Fukunaga returning to television. Even though Beasts of no Nation did very well for a film that was outrightly snubbed at the Oscars, television is the medium that made Fukunaga. He had several successful films before True Detective, but it wasn’t until after he did the first season that his career really took off.
Cary Fukunaga has a new TV project in the pipeline — an adaptation of the bestselling novel, The Alienist. According to The Wrap, several rather mysterious sources have pointed to Garrett Hedlund as the lead. Hedlund is best known as Sam Flynn form Tron: Legacy, though he was also in the despised new version of Pan.

The Alienist will supposedly signal a relaunch of TNT’s drama output, which has largely relied on syndicated series. This new project will also be produced by Anonymous Content, the same production company behind True Detective.
Although this doesn’t qualify as an official announcement, and TNT is keeping mum on casting for now, it’s likely that Hedlund is at least far up in the running. There’s no official date for The Alienist yet, though it is scheduled for sometime in 2016. This might be the project that can get Cary Fukunaga back to the Emmy’s and the award circuit in general.

Maybe he’d have better luck this time around than he did with both True Detective and Beasts of no Nation. Like HBO’s upcoming series, The Night Of, The Alienist has the potential to help fill the void left by True Detective while we wait patiently for season three.
