A fan has made a short film inspired by True Detective’s first season.

The first season of True Detective is the season of TV that just keeps on trucking. This summer a comic book series will debut inspired by True Detective’s first season, and now a fan has created a short film also inspired by True Detective. Basically it’s a really good time to be the first season of True Detective.

YouTube user Sachi Ediriweera took major inspiration from True Detective to create his own short film project, Garden of Bones. The ten minute short film has fairly high production values for a fan project. The plot itself doesn’t take direction inspiration from True Detective, but there’s still plenty of Pizzolatto in it.

It is, at its core, a revenge story. Theres no dialogue so the visuals are left to speak for themselves. That doesn’t end up being an impediment. You can watch it below:

It was even entered in a few small festivals, so you know it’s the real deal. This may be the first serious fan created film project inspired by True Detective that we’ve seen so far. Considering that the first season is now a couple of years old, that’s a little surprising. We’re used to usually just seeing spoofs, though even those can be fairly creative.

Garden of Bones successfully captures the True Detective feel and style without actually copying it or borrowing from the narrative, and that alone is notable. What we really need now is more. The worst thing we can say about this is that there isn’t more of it.
