Nic Pizzolatto’s Next Project Doesn’t Have to be True Detective

There’s been no official word on whether or not True Detective will be Nic Pizzolatto’s next project.

True Detective is taking some time off to get Nic Pizzolatto the room he needs to avoid another season two. That doesn’t mean that True Detective season three necessarily has to be Pizzolatto’s next project. There actually hasn’t been any announced plans on what Pizzolatto has coming next, or even what he is currently working on.

All we really have to go on is Nic Pizzolatto’s HBO deal which will keep him with the network at least until 2018. That ostensibly means that whatever Pizzolatto produces next will belong to HBO, whether it be a new series, True Detective, or even a movie. Pizzolatto is a painfully private person, and that’s at least part of why there has been radio silence since season two ended.

More from HBO

Whatever Nic Pizzolatto is working on now, he’s keeping it to himself. There are currently no hints as to what the mystery project might be, though it would make the most sense for it to be the third season of True Detective. If he has actually chosen to hire writers, however, that could leave him open to work on multiple projects at once.

The only project other that Nic Pizzolatto has publicly contributed to in the last year was the remake of The Magnificent Seven, though his draft has been worked on by other writers since he first took a crack at it.

Next: Will True Detective continue to take risks on actors?

Even though it would make the most sense for True Detective season three to come next, that doesn’t mean it has to. We don’t know what Pizzolatto is currently up to, and that’s how he wants it to be. And we could be waiting up to a year to find out exactly what it is.
