Taylor Kitsch Will Direct Himself in His Own Movie

Taylor Kitsch will direct and star in his own feature film. So there.

We haven’t heard much from Taylor Kitsch since the end of True Detective. True, he did star in an animated movie, but he hasn’t been seen much outside of that. Perhaps fed up with that arrangement, Taylor Kitsch is taking fate into his own hands in a big way.

According to Deadline, Taylor Kitsch will not only write, not only star, but will also direct his own movie. Thank you very much.  The film, Piece, is the story of three best friends whose lives change after a drug run. Kitsch will, of course, play the lead.

Kitsch is going all-out here. It’s not often that actors direct and star in their own material, and there is definite risk involved. It’s almost as if Kitsch is going for the equivalent of an EGOT with this.

More from HBO

Out of entire main cast of both True Detective seasons, Taylor Kitsch is definitely he odd-man out. He’s the only one to not have a legitimate film career behind him, and no, Friday Night Lights is not on the same level. There also, frankly, hasn’t been much interest in his career post-True Detective. To be fair, it’s difficult even for Vince Vaughn or Rachel McAdams to compete with the beast that is Matthew McConaughey.

Piece will continue Taylor Kitsch’s working relationship with Peter Berg — the two go back to Friday Night Lights and have worked on other projects together. Berg’s Film44 will be backing Kitsch on this journey of self-discovery. There are no other details available about Piece just yet, though you can bet we’ll be keeping an eye on it going forward.

Next: Could Cary Fukunaga find his way back to True Detective?

Hopefully it will give Taylor Kitsch’s the kickstart that his career needs. As in, the kickstart that True Detective season two couldn’t deliver.
