Netflix Has Picked up Cary Fukunaga’s Maniac
Car Fukunaga’s next series has found a home with the streaming giant.
Cary Fukunaga will be returning to TV in a big way, effectively putting his film career on hold for at least a year. First up will be The Alienist for TNT, and that will soon be followed by the newly announced Maniac. Maniac is a remake of a Nordic series of the same name. Except this one will star Jonah Hill and Emma Stone.
Maniac was announced only a few short days ago, and at that point not only did it not have a writer, it also didn’t have a network home. That has changed somewhat. Deadline is reporting that Netflix has gone ahead and picked up Maniac straight to series, which is what Paramount and Anonymous Content had in mind in the first place.

Cary Fukunaga will direct, at the very least, the first season. Anything more than that is up in the air and also depends on the series’ success. It’s a big deal to nab a series like this that has major talent already on-board before a script exists.
It likely helps that Maniac is based on a pre-existing series and doesn’t have to start entirely from scratch. For those that needs a quick catchup, Maniac is about a mental patient played by Jonah Hill that invents a fantasy world. Emma Stone will play another patient, though there aren’t many details available on her role.
