The Dark Tower, starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba, is actually really happening now.

Outside of The Sea of Trees, which doesn’t even have a U.S release date, things have been pretty great for Matthew McConaughey lately. They also haven’t been too shabby for Stephen King fans, as there are multiple King adaptations in the works. One of them, The Dark Tower, is now another step closer to becoming a reality.

Multiple sources are reporting that at the 2016 Cinemacon, Sony announced that the thirst gears of filming The Dark Tower have started turning. Principal photography has begun, which is not too exciting by itself. When taken into the larger context of The Dark Tower, that is, that The Dark Tower with Matthew McConaughey is a real thing that is happening now, it’s stupefyingly exciting.

Sony is trying to go for a quick-turnaround on The Dark Tower, and they want it out next year. If it does well, there will likely be more movies. A lot is riding on this one.

Matthew McConaughey also spoke to MTV briefly about The Dark Tower and we he decided to take it:

"“I’m not a big sci-fi buff… this one came along, though…The man in black, I looked at that and said, ’Oh, I can be whoever I want to be in this one.’ I’m not sure who I’m going to be yet.”"

It’s a fairly typical McConaughey response. It’s worth pointing out that The Dark Tower isn’t exactly sic-fi, for the most part, but really a fantasy-western hybrid. Principal photography doesn’t include the actors themselves, so the real heavy-lifting hasn’t really begun yet. Still, it’s an important first step in bringing The Dark Tower to life.

Next: Olivia Munn and Jason Bateman for True Detective season three.

If the film stays on schedule it should only be a couple of months until we start seeing the first images of Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba facing off.
