Jon Stewart’s HBO Project Could Land Before November

Jon Stewart’s mysteries HBO project might be here before next winter.

Jon Stewart’s four-year deal with HBO could soon be bearing fruit. The former host of The Daily Show has been working on a semi-secret show with HBO that will be geared towards HBO Now. Those hoping that Stewart would continue in the tradition of The Daily Show may be a bit disappointed on that front.

According to Variety, speaking with a reporter from CNN, HBO CEO Richard Plepler said that he was “hopeful” that Stewart would return to television before the November election. Although Plepler did not spill the beans on what, exactly, Stewart has been working on all this time, he did talk about having him on board:

"“It is a perfect example of bringing a remarkable original voice into the house, giving a new opportunity of expression to that original voice and saying, ‘We now have the flexibility to let you paint however you want to.”"

That’s good news. Stewart will be able to run his project the way he wants, and Plepler reiterated that point by saying that “My hunch is it will evolve over time. It will iterate over time…He has free reign to do whatever he wants.”

More from HBO

Jon Stewart being given total freedom on HBO sounds like it could be a serious boon. Short-form work targeted at HBO Now doesn’t sound all that exciting, so hopefully Stewart and his team will be able to do something special with it.

That could also mean that regular HBO subscribers end up missing out on some of the experience, though there is no reason to believe that Stewart’s show will be exclusive to the streaming service.

Having Jon Stewart back on TV before the election would be a nice win for HBO, as Stewart’s passed commentary on election season garnered much attention and acclaim. That’s likely what they’re pushing for now, though it sounds like Plepler is in no hurry to rush it along.
