The Leftovers Loses a Cast Member in its Third Season

The third season of The Leftovers will be down at least one regular cast member.

The Leftovers has been one of the most intense dramas on HBO in years. Its first season had a little trouble finding its way, but the second season caught fire. After the second season did so well it was odd to learn that the third season would serve as its final one. Though it’s not like The Leftovers has ever been a ratings heavy-hitter.

The main cast will return for the final bow, though a familiar face won’t be making the jump. According to TV Line, Ann Dowd, who played Patti Levin, won’t be returning. That might not actually be a huge deal. Levin didn’t make it out of the first season alive, and even though she was a constant voice in season two her character is not necessarily required anymore. She could always return as a guest star.

Here’s a clip of Patti from the first season:

More from HBO

If The Leftovers is able to wrap up on its own two feet it could go a long way to patching up Damon Lindelof’s reputation, which has taken a hit in recent years for what some have considered shoddy writing and planning. That’s a reputation that stretches all the way back to Lost, so maybe it’s time it changed. Even though The Leftovers hasn’t been able to bring in the ratings for HBO, it has been critically adored as of late.

Next: Revealing the Thrones is exclusive to HBO Now.

It’s subject matter is decidedly on the darker side, and there are moments in at least the first season that could be described as “crushing.” Fortunately for fans of the show it will have a conclusion in its third act, unlike the beloved Deadwood which was unceremoniously canceled without a proper ending. Sometimes that’s the best we can hope for.
