Is Veep HBO’s Funniest Show Ever?

facebooktwitterreddit

Veep could go down as not only one of the funniest shows on TV, but certainly the funniest show that HBO has produced so far.

HBO’s Veep is something special. It’s a political comedy that knows what it’s good at and does it consistently well. It doesn’t try to turn a story into something serious — even story events that end up being serious for the characters are frequently played for laughs. Dark, dry, laughs. Veep does own its sensibilities to its British counterpart, The Think of It. It’s perhaps because of that sense of dryness that Veep makes succeeding feel so effortless. Not only has Veep pulled in a crazy number of awards, including multiple Emmy wins for Julia-Louis Dreyfus, it still manages to stay relevant after four and a half seasons.

More from HBO

Even though creator and showrunner Armando Iannucci departed at the end of the fourth season, season five of

Veep

has continued strong. That’s largely because, frankly,

Veep

doesn’t take very many risks. As an extremely raunchy political comedy, it sticks firmly to its own formula without many shakeups. This is the rare case when such a policy pays off. https://youtu.be/B42PhWJ2_00

Veep

is now the leading comedy on HBO;

Vice

Principals

will come later this summer and

Togetherness

was canceled.

Silicon Valley,

though also all-around solid, is missing what makes

Veep

great. Maybe that comes back to its aforementioned British roots. If

Game of Thrones

is HBO’s top drama (and, of course, top show overall)

Veep

takes it in comedy.

Next: Bryan Cranston is serious about playing LBJ in All The Way.

Even the legendary

Curb Your Enthusiasm

couldn’t stay this great for this long. It’s possible that

Veep

will dip in quality as it continues on, but if there is anything that can be learned from

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s

record-breaking run, anything is now possible.
