HBO just picked up a few new pilots, including one from Adam McKay and Will Ferrell.

HBO has been announcing a slew of potential new shows lately. Some of the might not ever see the light of the day, like the David Fincher project, but that’s just the nature of the beast. Several new pilots were announced that could grow up to be full-fledged shows, and one of them includes both Adam McKay and Will Ferrell.

Adam McKay cut his teeth on comedies like Anchor Man, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers. He only recently found serious fame with the fantastic The Big Short. If there is one thing that three of the aforementioned movies have in common, it’s that they contain dangerous levels of Will Ferrell.

More from HBO

According to Variety, McKay will be bringing Will Ferrell along as an executive producer on Succession, a show billed as being a family drama. That’s a bit different from McKay’s usual fair, but The Big Short proved that a little drama is perfectly within his wheelhouse. He will be on board to direct the pilot episode, though it’s not clear now if he will stay on to direct the series assuming it gets an order from HBO. Hopefully Succession will be able to standout at HBO and not end up like Togetherness.

Also ordered was a show from Katheryn Bigelow. The Bigelow project, titled Mogadishu, Minnesota, has been in the works for a little while. The series will look at Jihadi recruitment — a perfect fit for the direct of The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty.

It’s always exciting when a network announces new shows, but it’s worth keeping in mind that not all of them will ever see the light of day. Cautiously optimistic would be the proper way to approach it.
