What Will Brexit Mean for HBO?

The impact of Brexit hasn’t been worked out yet, but it could impact HBO in a big way.

It’s strange to think that the UK will no longer be a part of the EU. The decision has already had far-reaching repercussions, but it’s all just beginning. It could have an effect on television and film productions that shoot abroad, and HBO currently has the largest show in the world that does so.

Game of Thrones shoots almost exclusively abroad, a lot of it is done in Europe. It is far too early to know the full impacts on the UK’s decision to go it alone, but those involved with HBO and Game of Thrones have already come out to attempt to quell any potential fears. According to Variety, The team behind Game of Thrones released a statement saying that the series should be alright:

"“We do not anticipate that the result of the EU Referendum will have any material effect on HBO producing ‘Game of Thrones,’”"

There’s careful wording there. HBO wants to steady the ship, but not even they know exactly what’s going to happen in the future. Game of Thrones does, however, have the benefit of not only being a well-established brand, but also one of the most popular shows of all time. There is, in reality, little reason to think that Game of Thrones will be effected.

The Brexit comes soon after the news that the cast of Game of Thrones could see substantial pay bumps for a potential season eight. While Game of Thrones is likely safe, the decision could negatively impact HBO’s future projects that would involve talent from the UK or shooting locations. It’s all too early to know for sure, though the general outlook right now is not good.

The particulars are so how Game of Thrones and HBO are going to avoid trouble weren’t given, and it’s possible that not even they are sure right now. The situation is very fluid right now.
