Over one million people watched The Night Of ahead of its premiere
HBO has been doing a fine job of promoting its new crime miniseries, The Night Of. The fact that the actors themselves haven’t been making the rounds on the usual late night talk shows hasn’t seemed to hurt the hype. HBO has been making sure the play the latest trailer before each of its other original shows, so if you’ve at least been watching Game of Thrones, you are familiar with The Night Of.
In a move to perhaps get more people interested, HBO allowed prospective fans to stream and watch the first episode on demand over a week before its debut. And according to The Wrap, it looks like that little move has paid off. The first episode has apparently been watched more than 1.5 million times — that’s enough to break records.

Those are seriously impressive numbers, especially for a series’ debut season. Add on the fact that The Night Of isn’t a full series but is actually only a miniseries, and it becomes astounding. It’s possible, likely even, that many of the folks that checked out The Night Of early are True Detective fans trying to get a fix. HBO tapped into something strong with True Detective, and it’s in their best interest to keep it.
This could end up being a move that HBO repeats in the future, at least for new shows. It is a tad curious why HBO felt like it needed to get The Night Of early; it hasn’t done that with its other miniseries.
Next: The Leftovers adds Lindsay Duncan.
Regardless, it has all worked out in the end. If all continue to goes well, The Night Of could be the third season of True Detective that we may or may not actually be getting.
