With the departure of Ann Dowd from The Leftovers confirmed, HBO has added veteran actress Lindsay Duncan to the ensemble cast in a recurring role, according to The Hollywood Reporter. No details on the character she will be playing have been released but this comes as no surprise considering the show thrives on mystery and unanswered questions. A trademark of Lindelof’s work that hasn’t always worked out for him in the past. The Leftovers, however, goes nicely against that grain.
The previously announced promotion of Scott Glenn to series regular makes it safe to speculate that Duncan may be playing a character related to the eccentric older Garvey. Creator Damon Lindelof expressed a desire last year to delve deeper into the past of Kevin Garvey Sr. making it plausible that Duncan could be playing his deceased wife through flashbacks or another mystical episode like last seasons “International Assassin”. There’s never really been a shortage of surprises on The Leftovers, to Lindelof’s credit.

Meanwhile Duncan is no stranger to playing characters who are shrouded in mystery after doing multiple television stints on shows like Sherlock, Black Mirror, and Doctor Who. Duncan joins an already impressive cast but has already compiled quite the resume herself with many film and theatre roles. Yet The Leftovers is a show which loves asking questions yet rarely gives answers, meaning that what capacity Duncan will be utilized in the upcoming season will most likely remain a secret until the show airs in 2017.
