So did Naz Actually kill Andrea on The Night Of?
The biggest mystery currently behind The Night Of
The Night Of’s premiere episode was a big deal. It proved that HBO could do serious crime drama outside of True Detective, and it pulled it off in a way that other shows haven’t been able to. There is one major mystery held over from the first episode, and that is whether or not Naz actually killed Andrea, the girl he met in his father’s cab.
The first episode of The Night Of spends so much time mounting the evidence against Naz, that it makes it feel as if there is little room for him to actually be innocent. It could be argued, however, that the his guilt isn’t actually all that important. The show appears to be more about how he got to that point, not about whether or not he did it. Still, it’s a question worth pondering.

The episode paints Naz as a quiet, relatively nice guy that usually does the right thing. A couple of times it’s touched on that he does only what he is told to, so it’s evident that he has some deeper emotions brewing. There is no single thread in the episode, outside of the evidence, that could actually point to him. He’s not the type, and that’s part of what attracted Jack Stone to him in the first place.
Andrea was brutally murdered, and Naz was under the effects of drugs when it happened. That doesn’t point a strong finger in his direction. Andrea was a mysterious person, that much is made abundantly clear. There are secrets there waiting to be unraveled. As of this moment, it doesn’t feel as if Naz is guilty of killing her.

The greater question, however, will be whether or not there will be evidence to the contrary. There will be a lot to unpack in the remaining eight episodes of The Night Of, but there’s little doubt at this point that it can handle it.
