HBO did very well this Spring, According to them
The ratings for HBO’s Spring series have been spectacular
When things go well, networks want to talk about it. That also includes, of course, HBO’s 94 Emmy nominations. It therefore makes perfect sense that HBO would want to openly discuss its ratings for their spring TV season, which have been pretty great. To that end, they sent out a press release to spread the good news.
HBO contributes the success to the combined efforts of HBO proper, HBO GO, and HBO NOW. But let’s get real here — this is because of Game of Thrones. The sixth season of Game of Thrones not only performed better than all previous seasons, it even beat season five’s ratings by five million. The traffic from HBO GO and HBO NOW apparently made up 40% of viewers. That’s no small feat.

It’s also worth talking about that both Veep and Silicon Valley did well and continue to do better than previous seasons. Similarly, both Last Week Tonight and Real Time continued to see growth. But really, this is a Game of Thrones party, and it’s further proof that more and more people are perfectly happy streaming the show. While this is all good news, and the growth of HBO’s streaming platforms are even better news, it’s worth wondering what’s going to happen in a post-Game of Thrones world.
All of the heavy traffic, both streaming and watching on normal television, are driven by Game of Thrones. HBO has successfully delayed the end for another two seasons — and actually delayed the show itself — but these ratings can’t possibly be sustainable in the long-term. Something is going to give, and that thing is going to Game of Thrones.
Next: The Night Of's Sophia Black-D'Elia has no idea what's going to happen.
Whatever will happen then is anyone’s guess, but for now, HBO has earned the right to send out a celebratory press release.
