Does a Deadwood Revival Matter Anymore?
The Deadwood movie is still in the works, but will it have an impact?
Deadwood is often touted as an example of a series that was cut down in its prime. That’s not incorrect. Deadwood was cancelled by HBO and never got the ending that it deserved, despite a dedicated (yet niche) following and strong critical reception. Rumors of a series revival have been swirling for a long time, but there is officially a movie in the works.
During the TCA press tour — while heading questions of violence — HBO’s Head of Programming, Casey Bloys, talked about the Deadwood movie. It’s currently being written, but it actually hasn’t been greenlit yet. This is an important distinction because it by no means guarantees that a film will actually see the light of day. After all the work that is being done to make this a reality, it’s possible that Deadwood’s moment has simply passed.

The series ended ten years ago (!) and the more time that passes the less impact any sort of revival, including a movie, will make. People move on, forget, or just aren’t as interested. Not to mention that Ian McShane is currently signed on with the American Gods series over at Starz. A movie would require less commitment than another season, and it is a good thing that the Deadwood cast is interested in returning.
Deadwood has become a beloved series but HBO is going to have to consider how much weight they would be wiling to put behind a movie. Brining it to theaters, if it does happen, likely wouldn’t be in their best interest at this point.
Next: Game of Thrones will get 8 seasons. And a spinoff?
It’s easy to talk about how great Deadwood was (it was really great) but it is an entire thing altogether to actually pay attention and show up if a movie does appear. If it’s not a success this could impact the future of other potential HBO revivals. Either it way it will still be a while before we see how this shakes out.
