AT&T and HBO have signed a major new deal

It kind of goes without saying that HBO is a giant of the TV landscape. There’s no real hyperbole there — it just is. That can make deals with HBO rather profitable, especially while Game of Thrones is still around. Enter AT&T, which has just signed a significant content distribution deal with HBO.

According to Deadline, this new deal will technically expand AT&T and Direct TV’s current deal, so customers will still be able to get both HBO and Cinemax. Both HBO and Cinemax will also be worked into a mobile deal, though there aren’t any details about that just yet. This is all a part of AT&T’s OTT (over the top) content expansion. HBO’s president of global distribution, Simon Sutton, talked up the new deal in a press release, calling it both “groundbreaking” and “first-of-its-kind.”

More from HBO

HBO has made significant content distribution deals before, most notable with Amazon, which is not the exclusive streaming partner of HBO shows outside of HBO’s own ecosystem. Amazon Prime users have access to a wealth of HBO’s back catalogue, something which both Netflix and Hulu have been denied access to.

This deal is first and foremost about getting new HBO subscribers, and Sutton says that it will now be easier to both subscribe and consume. It’s really never been easier to access HBO, and now it will somehow be even easier. It’s safe to say that this is a major get for AT&T, and it will be interesting to see how it works out for HBO in the long run.

HBO will likely always be a sought after partner, but a lot of that right now comes from the availability of Game of Thrones. HBO is going to have to work hard to figure out a suitable replacement when the time comes. It could be Westworld, but we’ll have to wait and see.
