Game of Thrones season 7 adds Jim Broadbent to the cast
There’s going to be more or less a year from this point until Game of Thrones season 7 airs, and that leaves plenty of time for casting news to roll in. Game of Thrones isn’t all that secretive when it comes to casting; it tends to celebrate its choices. And for those hanging on for any word at all about the penultimate season (like most of us) there is reason to celebrate.
According to an exclusive report from Entertainment Weekly, Game of Thrones season 7 will add Jim Broadbent to the cast. Broadbent is a celebrated, master-class actor and has starred in films like Moulin Rogue, Gangs of New York, Hot Fuzz, and Harry Potter as Professor Horace Slughorn. Also the criminally under-appreciated Life is Sweet. So, yeah, the guy has been around.

Jim Broadbent will apparently have a “significant” role in seventh season, but there isn’t anymore to report than that. As happy as Game of Thrones is broadcasting its production, it us understandably secretive about plot details. Hopefully Broadbent’s role will be more than what Ian McShane’s ending up being, even though his was technically significant. McShane was only in a single episode, and he could have been played by anyone.
The casting of Jim Broadbent is only the first of what will be a long (and mostly enjoyable) game of cast announcements that will be coming in for the next six months or more. There is a lot riding on season 7, and Game of Thrones is going to have to justify being split into two seasons.

Broadbent’s role may end up being meaningful, but it’s doubtful that Game of Thrones is going to introduce majorly important new characters at this point while it attempts to wind down for the eventual finale.
