When will we see a new Season of The Night Of?
A new season of The Night Of isn’t out of the question
The Night Of wrapped up about a week ago, and by most accounts it was a hit. Not one without issues, however, but not enough to bring it down. If there is one thing we love, it’s good television, and we want more of it once we’ve gotten a taste. As per the usual cycle of life, now that the supposed miniseries is over, when can we sink our teeth into a new season of The Night Of?
That question isn’t as farfetched as it may sound. The Night Of was always billed as a miniseries, not an anthology series, and so it was never expected for there to actually be any more. However, the masterminds behind the series, Steven Zaillian and Richard Price, have left the fate of the series up in the air. That is the right move; don’t set expectation with a renewal, but keep the door open. It’s a tactic that HBO should have allowed True Detective to take.

Zaillian and Price both agree that The Night Of will only return if the story is right. That’s a fair stipulation, and one that HBO seems to be comfortable with granting. It’s important to note that there are currently no new plans for a new season of The Night Of, though it could be referred to as a new series, much like how British television operates. It could even go by a different name, though there is the possibility of spreading confusion that way.
HBO is busy prepping Westworld, so if more The Night Of is secretly in the pipeline (we doubt it) there shouldn’t be an announcement until well after October. It’s also possible that HBO will wait to see how The Night Of performs at next year’s Emmy awards before they decide to potentially do more. Since no expectations have been set, there is no issue with having to wait. It also, of course, helps that there is so much other great TV coming in the next couple of months.
Next: The Night Of couldn't catch True Detective.
The Night Of may not have actually reached its full potential, but it was overall an excellent addition to HBO’s roster. That will be true even if there never ends up being more, but it’s usually wise to leave the door open, even if it’s just a crack.
