Playstation Vue has some new best buddies

With Game of Thrones going strong for at least two more seasons and the debut of Westworld right around the corner, HBO is one hot commodity. Everyone wants a piece of it, and now Sony, specifically Playstation, has got a meaty chunk of it. Sony announced today that both HBO and Cinemax will be coming to its streaming service, Playstation Vue.

For those not in the know, Playstation Vue is a streaming service that acts are more like television than something like Netflix or Amazon. This is a big deal for a couple of reasons: one, live HBO will be available without a package subscription, and two, it marks Playstation Vue as a potential major player. Cinemax will be available as part of HBO or separately. Cinemax, by the way, is home to the fantastic The Knick.

More from HBO

Playstation is also running a promotion in which new users can subscribe to HBO through Playstation Vue and receive HBO NOW at no additional charge. Both channels will run $15 each — there is no package deal for picking up both. Playstation Vue is available on more than just the Sony video game consoles; you can also watch it on iOS, Fire TV, and many other major digital outlets.

HBO NOW standalone will be launching on PS4 and PS3 later on. Vue starts at $39.99 per month and goes up to $54.99, not including the separate costs of subscribing to HBO or Cinemax. The service is mainly meant to be a television substitute, a role that isn’t well filled by any other streaming platform.

Make no mistake, this move is a big deal. This is the first time that regular, live HBO has been available for streaming outside of a bundle. Playstation Vue is in a good position now to really make a dent on the market.
