The 2016 Emmys give the edge to HBO

It’s time once more to prepare for another awards ceremony. The 2016 Emmys are upon us, and HBO has managed to rake in an insane 94 nominations, and that’s not even the most it’s ever had. It’s worth noting, however, that the above number counts the instances in which HBO is competing against itself — such as in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama category, which feature three Game of Thrones actors.

Game of Thrones had itself a barn-burner of a season, and it would be a real shocker if it didn’t bring home the gold this year. The Emmys have never been all that great at recognizing Game of Thrones actors besides Peter Dinklage, but this would be the year to give Lena Headey or Masie Williams some love. Game of Thrones will likely be HBO’s strongest contender.

More from HBO

Behind that is Veep. Julia Louis Dreyfus has won multiple times for her role as Selina Meyer, but it would be nice if Laurie Metcalf won for Getting On instead. Either outcome is a win for HBO in general. There are several instances in which Veep goes head-to-head with Silicon Valley. If the past is anything to go on, Veep is the favorite to win. Between the two of them they have five nominations in the Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. Sorry Transparent, but it’s not going to happen here.

HBO has already scored some wins for Game of Thrones and Girls at the Creative Arts Emmys, giving them a nice lead. There are certain categories in which a victory for HBO is far from assured, such as in Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series. The only nominee there is All the Way, but it’s going up against multiple nominations of Fargo and The People v. O.J. Simpson. Good luck with that.

Next: Westworld is a hit

And then there’s Beyonce’s Lemonade, which is up for four awards, including Outstanding Variety Special and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special. It’s a loose definition of “variety,” but we won’t quibble too much. HBO’s biggest competition is going to be from FX, though HBO does have sheer numbers on its side.

The 68th Emmy Awards will be broadcast tonight at 7:00 PM EST.
