Has it been long Enough to Revive True Detective?
Can we let bygones be bygones and revive True Detective?
There are not many people out there that would argue against the greatness of True Detective’s first season. It helped revive Matthew McConaughey’s career and put director Cary Fukunaga on the map. For a short amount of time, creator Nic Pizzolatto was HBO’s greatest asset. And then we had season 2. Has enough time passed for HBO to revive True Detective?

Season 2 ended in August of 2015, a little over a year ago. HBO have been keeping on open mind about what to do with True Detective, and they should be. The series, in its prime, was an incredible hit. Season 2 left a bad taste in everyone’s mouthes, partially because it wasn’t given enough time to develop. It was, in other words, rushed. This past summer was the summer of The Night Of, a one-off miniseries with tones of True Detective. Among other things, The Night Of helped keep interest in HBO’s crime offerings.
The summer of 2016 would have been too soon to revive True Detective — it would have been impossible not to look at it with alerted expectations due to season 2. But 2017 is looking mighty fine, and as of now HBO has no other crime show on the docket to fill that summer slot. Plus the success of other HBO shows, like Westworld, has made True Detective season 2 feel like something that happened long ago.

HBO will return to True Detective when it’s ready. More time is not going to hurt the series in this case. There is an argument to be made that perhaps it should never return at all, but if the right pieces can fall into place to erase the memory of season 2 is the publics’ minds, we can think of no good reason why it shouldn’t happen.
