The Next Westworld is Written by cult Comics Writer Ed Brubaker

Each episode of Westworld brings us closer to certain answers — like what sort of game everyone keeps talking about — but also more and more questions. We have already dissected the preview for episode 4, ‘Dissonance Theory,’ but here it is again in case you need a little catchup:

This promises to be a big episode for Westworld, and it could end up being the most memorable one of the season. The reason for that is that it’s the first episode with a writing credit from Ed Brubaker, the comic writer famous for Criminal, Fatale, and his work on both Batman and Daredevil. That is far from an exhaustive list, by the way. Brubaker has been on the writing staff the entire time, but ‘Dissonance Theory’ will stand as the first episode in which he has a “written by” credit.
Ed Brubaker may not be a household name, but fans of comics will know how distinctive his work is. Over his career he has gravitated more toward noir themes than anything else. Of course, a series has to maintain a proper tone and style across all of its episodes, so it’s not clear just how much of Brubaker’s influence is going to make it to the final cut. Hopefully the writing credit gives us some idea.

Westworld hasn’t taken the time to slow down. By creating mystery after mystery and not answer questions it runs the risk of wearing on its viewer base. It’s still a little too early for that to happen, but it is something to look out for. It will be most interesting to see how a Brubaker episode attempts to handle the already heavy and involved mythos that the show has created in three short weeks.
