7. Jessica’s Birth and Education

When Bill is punished for killing one of their own kind, his punishment is to make an innocent girl into a vampire. That girl is Jessica Hamby, a teenager who has led a very sheltered life. Bill is wracked with guilt about making her a vampire, and he fumbles a lot when he tries to teach her about being a vampire. Not only does he try to convince her to only drink Tru Blood, but he has no idea how to deal with modern teenagers.

Bill begs Eric for help, and Eric agrees to teach Jessica because he’s amused at the idea of Bill owing him a favor. After a few days, Jessica returns to Bill with a new attitude, a new wardrobe that makes her fit in to the Fangtasia crowd, and a new thirst for human blood.

After some time, Jessica figures out how to navigate the human world, though she still makes mistakes every now and then. Arlene and Sookie help her to fit in by getting her a job as a waitress at Merlotte’s.
