Don’t Expect Westworld Season 2 until 2018
HBO’s mega hit may not return until 2018 despite planning for five seasons.
It wasn’t a surprise that Westworld was renewed. It was, however, a surprise to learn that it might not be ready in time for 2017. Westworld is a complicated show that just keeps adding layers, so it makes sense that it would take some time to hammer out. We’ve already waited longer than expected for the firs season, but according to HBO’s Casey Bloys we may have another long wait on our hands for season 2.
According to Bloys Westworld season 2 doesn’t have a concrete game plan just yet:
"“That will depend as we get up and running. With Westworld, because the production is such a big endeavor, I don’t exactly know when [it will premiere] yet. I can’t speculate other than to say it’ll either be ’17 or ’18. Probably more like ’18…”"

Game of Thrones is another huge, costly production for HBO, but it’s also one that has proven itself time and again. It makes sense for it to be a priority. Westworld season 2 isn’t going to enjoy that sort of status, which may actually be a good thing in the end. The series will have more time to figure out exactly where it’s going. Still, it is puzzling that production wouldn’t be ready to have a second season in time for next year considering that part of the original delay was due to planing for future seasons.
It’s not out of the question that we could see season 2 next year, but Bloys tempering expectations doesn’t inspire confidence. The important bit, of course, is that it’s actually happening and we won’t be left with one season. And it’s obvious that HBO isn’t worried about losing audiences by taking a year off. This maneuver will also help put focus back on Game of Thrones, which, again, is the real priority out of the two.
Next: Divorce is getting the second season it deserves.
Until we learn more it would be wise for fans not to get their hopes up for seeing more Westworld next year. Be happy with what you’ve got and all that.
