Chuck Blazer was at the heart of FIFA’s corruption scandal.

Even for those that aren’t so interested in sports, Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel always tends to offer up something worth watching. The stories are framed with human interest angles, making them attractive to sports and non-sports fans alike. Tonight (Tuesday, November 22nd) Real Sports will dive into the FIFA scandal involving eventual informer Chuck Blazer.

Blazer’s story will feature the same in-depth reporting that Real Sports is known for, though it won’t involve the man himself. Instead, the story will be told from several people who knew him well: Mary Lynn Blanks, Michael Hershman, and the FBI’s Richard Frankel.

The episode is titled ‘Blazer: The Inside Story.’ In order to keep from spending the remainder of his life in jail, Blazer became a FBI informant. It’s a pretty ridiculous story that is honestly a bit hard to be believed. Mary Lynn Blanks, who can be seen below, met Blazer when he was a “suburban soccer dad.” Later on, he would come to own an apartment in Trump Tower just for his cats at $5,500 a month. True story.

In recent years FIFA has been unveiled as a corrupt organization, and some of that is due to Blazer flipping. Blazer, however, was also part of the problem. As Michael Hershman puts it, he stole “millions of dollars that could’ve been used for youth development in sports, for better facilities, for better health care in sports have been diverted.”

That’s only a small part of the story; things get even wilder than that. If you have even a passing interest in soccer, or just corruption in general. this is not something you’re going to want to miss. Real Sports with Bryan Gumbel will be on tonight at 10 PM EST.
