Thomas Haden Church Deserved a Golden Globes Nomination
Divorce’s Robert, played by Thomas Haden Church, got snubbed by the Golden Globes.
Right off the heels of the Critic’s Choice Awards, the Golden Globes swooped in to deliver HBO with a handsome 14 nominations. That’s all well and good, but that doesn’t mean everyone is going to get the attention they deserves. Nominations for Game of Thrones and Westworld are so obvious that they go without saying, but it wouldn’t be right to ignore the snubs. For one, where is Thomas Haden Church’s nom for Divorce?

It’s perfectly fine to be happy that the Golden Globes chose to rightfully recognize The Night Of, and even Sarah Jessica Parker, but it’s Thomas Haden Church as Robert that makes Divorce really tick. Nominating Parker and not Church feels as if Divorce is being thrown a bone; as if it’s only nominated because of Parker’s involvement. That’s not to belittle her performance as Frances, it is only to say that she is only a piece of that puzzle. And not the most integral one.
Robert is a tragic character with far too many faults to reliably list, but he brings a dark humor that Divorce sorely needs. Out of the two main characters, Robert is far from innocent, and that includes continuing to play disgustingly petty games. Robert brings a heart to the show that Frances’ coldness is incapable of.
Next: HBO is nominated for 14 Golden Globes.
But Divorce is not the most popular of shows right now, and its first season has proven to be a bit divisive. It’s also not the smoothest of watches. Award shows like the Golden Globes tend to be popularity contests, so it’s almost a wonder that Divorce was nominated at all. It’s right that it wasn’t nominated for Best Comedy (it’s note quite there yet) but it’s a true shame that Thomas Haden Church won’t be getting the nomination he deserves. Divorce is a better show with him on it.
