HBO gets Nominated for 13 SAG Awards
HBO nabs 13 SAG Award nominations, but it doesn’t lead the pack.
Award (nomination) season is in full swing now, and usually that brings good tidings for HBO. Things aren’t that simple this time around. While HBO raked in the most Golden Globe nominations, they didn’t perform so well at the Critics Choice Awards. The SAG Award nominations are in, and HBO has a healthy 13 nominations. But the network doesn’t come in first.

That particular distinction goes to Netflix, which has 17 nominations. Second place isn’t so bad, but it does speak to the high quality of modern television. It’s no longer a given that HBO is going to just swoop in and have Game of Thrones do all of the heavy lifting. Let’s get to it.
- Riz Ahmed, Bryan Cranston, and John Turturro for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series
- Audra McDonald and Kerry Washington Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series
- Peter Dinklage for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
- Thandie Newton for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
- Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
- Game of Thrones and Westworld for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
- Veep for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
- Game of Thrones and Westworld for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series
It’s great to see The Night Of getting the love that it deserves, even if Riz Ahmed and John Turturro will have to fight over it. Thandie Newton has been getting a lot of love for her role as Maeve, and this time around she’s the only Westworld cast member to score a nomination. Peter Dinklage and Julia Louis-Dreyfus are nothing new, and they’re both shoe-in for their respective categories. There is a lot of double-dipping going on here for HBO, so many actors will have to compete for the top prize.

What is most interesting is seeing Westworld nominated against Game of Thrones for Outstanding Performance in an Ensemble. That’s a well-deserved nomination, and one that Westworld deserves to win. It will be interesting to see if the fledging series can take down Game of Thrones in this particular category. If it does, it’s time to consider Westworld as the Game of Thrones replacement that we’re ready for.
The SAG Awards will air live on TBS at 8:00 PM EST on January 29th.
