Watch the Trailer for Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds
The first, and likely only, trailer for HBO’s documentary about the lives of Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher is here to break your heart.
We don’t always take the time to write about documentaries here. For one thing, HBO produces a lot of them, and many of them end up getting swept away by a torrent of great television. This, however, is the exception. Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds is a film that has been kicking around for a little while, and it has even made the festival circuit. Looking at the trailer now, after the loss of both of its stars, is tragic, but it’s also uplifting in the best way.

It’s the story of an impossible, practically Gilmore Girls-esque relationship between Carrie Fisher and her mother. It was largely filmed last year and fleshes out the lives of the two of them in what looks to be a deeply personal documentary. While it’s terribly sad that they have both passed away, Bright Lights is a fantastic way to celebrate them as they truly were: flawed, but loving people.
After being temporarily delayed, Bright Lights will make its debut on HBO this Saturday, January 7th. The film will incorporate home movies, interview with friends and family, as well as footage of them just living their lives. It’s probably safe to say that the anticipation for this is not going to get any higher; people want to be able to say goodbye. HBO ultimately made the right decision by not pushing the premiere too far back.

Before her death, Carrie Fisher and HBO were in talks to bring her newest memoir, The Princess Diarist, to the network in a show similar to Wishful Drinking. It’s a shame that we’ll never get to that come to fruition. Don’t hesitate to let us know if you’ll be tuning in Saturday night.
