HBO is Making a Movie About The Godfather
Love The Godfather? Shockingly, you are not alone
While we didn’t exactly see this coming, it’s not exactly a surprise. HBO will be producing a movie about the making of The Godfather, frequently considered to be one of the greatest films of all time. Go ahead, ask any male over the age of 40. We kid. According to Variety, The film is titled Francis & the Godfather, and it’s worth noting that it will not be a documentary, but an actual scripted movie. It is set to follow the entire production of The Godfather, from casting through filming. And also having to deal with the pesky actual mafia.

It’s early days yet, so there is no cast or director to speak of. The Godfather is experiencing something of a resurgence right not (if it ever went away in the first place,) due to the publishing of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Notebook. The book is Coppola’s account on trying to get The Godfather made, and has never been previously published. Now is as good a time as any to push forward with Francis & The Godfather.
HBO also has an interesting relationship with The Godfather, having aired the three movies in a special re-edited sequence. For what it’s worth, this new HBO project will only cover the first movie in the trilogy. This is also not the first time that HBO has made this sort of movie; they did something similar with Grey Gardens back in 2009.

It’s fair to say that as Francis & The Godfather moves forward, there is going to likely be an impressive promotional push. The Godfather is one of the most beloved movies of all time, and HBO is going to want to capitalize on that un-fading popularity. Just don’t expect anything to happen until 2018 at the earliest.
