“The Leftovers” stays in Australia as Nora and Kevin arrive down under in ‘G’Day Melbourne.’

Last week’s episode, “Crazy Whitefella Thinking,” showed viewers the action that led up to the final moments of episode 2 where a group of Australian women was interrupted by Kevin Garvey Sr. as they drowned a local police chief that happened to share his first name.

The standout installment set entirely in the Outback also shed some light on his motivation for moving down under, the meaning behind his brief appearance last season where he interacted with his son via a hotel TV, and what he’s been up to during his time in Australia as the world prepares for the seventh anniversary of the Sudden Departure.

As the title of season 3, episode 4 — “G’Day Melbourne” — suggests, the action will stay in Australia as Nora and Kevin Jr. arrive there under the guise of an investigation into the alleged machine that takes participants where the departed went using a radiation technique. The episode synopsis reads:

"“Kevin and Nora travel to Australia, where she continues to track down the masterminds of an elaborate con, while he catches a glimpse of an unexpected face from the past, forcing him to confront the traumatic events of three years earlier.”More from HBOHBO expects House of the Dragon season 2 release in summer 2024HBO delays three hit shows to 2025 but one big show is still coming in 2024Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty will end its run on HBOWinning Time season 2, episode 7 recap: “What Is and What Should Never Be”Winning Time season 2, episode 6 recap: “Beat L.A.”"

Kevin was just on the trip to tag along with Nora, but it’s clear that his time there will revive some of the troubles that he had last season. While the plastic bag over his head routine hinted that he was far from perfect, it seemed like his visions were gone for good, but the trailer for Sunday’s episode suggests otherwise.

In the clip, we see a visibly shaken Kevin admitting to Nora that he’s unable to confide in her after he’s seen chasing down what appears to be a woman wearing a peach head covering through a graffitied corridor. He later comes face-to-face with her and asks, “Is this real?”

His face bloodied after getting head butted, we also see him turn to his ex-wife, Laurie, to explain what he saw in a phone call home, while a stunned Nora asks Kevin if he’s talking to a dead person again, referring to his season-long visions of Guilty Remnant founder Patti Levin.

Meanwhile, with the $20,000 in tow that Mark Linn-Baker said was required, Nora is in a “sting operation” to hunt down what she believes to be an elaborate con. “I’m going to find them and I’m going to destroy them,” she vows.

But it’s unclear if there’s a part of Nora that thinks or wants to believe that the machine is real. There were hints that she was moved by the images of the participants on the video given to her by the Perfect Strangers star as they each pledged their sanity before using the device.
