HBO renews Veep for new season to premiere in 2018

HBO has renewed comedies “Veep” and “Silicon Valley” for new seasons to air in 2018.
HBO announced this week that they have decided to bring back Veep for a seventh season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The news comes as the series is midway through season 6, which wraps on June 25th.
The comedy underwent another reinvention this season, tracking Selina Meyers’ (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) post-presidential career as she deals with foreign diplomatic efforts, and attempts to build her own presidential library.
Despite the changes, every member of the talented ensemble cast has remained on the show, including Tony Hale, Anna Chlumsky, Reid Scott, Timothy Simons, Kevin Dunn, Gary Cole and Sam Richardson. Scott’s Dan “Danny” Egan and Simons’ Jonah Ryan have undergone the biggest transformations, with the former becoming the co-host of CBS This Morning, while the latter is now a New Hampshire congressman.

Veep has remained an awards favorite since premiering in 2012, winning 12 Emmy Awards throughout its run, including a record-setting five wins for Louis-Dreyfus in the lead actress in a comedy category, and two consecutive wins for best comedy series. It was also recently honored by the Peabody Awards at a ceremony that will air next week on PBS where Simons and Louis-Dreyfus recited some the show’s filthiest lines in their acceptance speech after being introduced by Sen. Al Franken.
HBO has also renewed Silicon Valley for season 5. Like Veep, it is set to return in 2018 after finishing its current fourth season next month. Both comedies have seen their ratings drop this year with The Leftovers as their lead-in on Sunday nights instead of Game of Thrones.
For instance, Veep has averaged 591,000 viewers and a 0.2 18-49 rating for its initial airings so far this season, according to TV by the Numbers. That’s down from 994,000 viewers and a 0.5 rating for last season. It hit a series low of 486,000 viewers and a 0.18 rating earlier this month, but its numbers usually double after a week of delayed viewing across all platforms.
