Stranger Things adds new characters for season 3

Stranger Things felt a bit overstuffed last season with all of the new characters but the series is looking to add even more.

Luckily, the new casting calls reveal the show is only searching for three new guest stars to alleviate any fears that there might not be enough time to focus on the original cast. Based on the descriptions, it would appear as though the sci-fi hit is planning to focus a bit more on the town of Hawkins than it did last year.

Thanks to That Hashtag Show, the casting calls have been released, giving fans a hint about what they’re in for next season. While there are no new kids joining the “party,” there are plenty of mysterious adult characters who spell trouble for the Hawkins town.

"“Mayor Larry Kline.” Described as a classic, 80’s style slick politician, “Kline” is described as pathetic and driven only by his own interests. The studio is looking for a male, 40s-60s, to fill the role."

It looks like Stranger Things might be introducing yet another adult to cause problems for the kids. Since the Hawkins Laboratory officials actually turned out to not be as bad in season 2, it’s time for another powerful villain to take the spotlight. In this modern era of politics, it’s easy to see the series highlight a slimy politician as a bad guy considering how many of them exist in real life. He will probably be more of a figurehead, someone who rises to power throughout the next season so he can progress as a multiple season villain.

"“Bruce.” A morally compromised news reporter in his 50s, “Bruce” was described as outwardly sexist, overweight and bedraggled."

It seems likely that Bruce and Mayor Larry will go hand-in-hand as a villainous duo. Set in the 1980’s when sexism was still rampant (more so than today), it seems safe to say that a politician would have a “morally compromised” reporter in his pocket. Sci-Fi generally likes to make statements about modern day issues, and with the rise of “fake news,” it would make sense for Stranger Things to try and acknowledge how harmful this growing sensation is.

"“Patricia Brown.” “Patricia” seems to be filing the role of the sweet, neighborhood elder. The studio is looking for a woman in her 70s for the role which will see her spending a lot of time tending to her garden and offering her advice to the neighborhood kids. Given the Duffer brothers affinity for subverting expectations, we find ourselves wondering if this sweet old lady might have some connection to the Upside Down; then again, that might be just the type of thing they want us to think we know and she just ends up a sweet old lady!"

To round out the new additions is Patricia, the typical kind of elderly woman who just loves gardening. While The Hashtag show speculates she could end up being more sinister than her casting call lets on, it seems more likely she is just a nice older woman. Perhaps her storyline will be attached to Bruce’s seeing as his description makes it clear that he’s sexist. She could be one of the first people to stand up to him, or maybe be a victim which spurs Joyce into action.

Next: Could The End Of The F***ing World get renewed?

Stranger Things won’t return until this fall but fans have already been speculating what could happen next season. Based on this new adult additions, it looks like Joyce and Hopper might be fighting a battle of public opinion rather than a supernatural one. They have always been the “outcasts” of Hawkins and it would fall in line with the series to have all of the heroes face off against their disbelieving neighbors.
