Could The End Of The F***ing World get a season two?

The End Of The F***ing World was one of the surprise hits for Netflix this winter despite the outlandish concept.

After the season finished on a cliffhanger, fans have been begging the streaming service to renew the British series. Unfortunately, the comic book that the show is based on has been entirely used up, and it’s unclear whether the writers would be interested in continuing after the book ended in 2011.

Like most successful miniseries, there are plenty of good arguments about why the show should be extended. The biggest reasoning comes from the cliffhanger ending: did James die? It’s the question that all viewers were asking themselves in those closing seconds and many want some closure. Lead actor, Alex Lawther, has already shown interest in returning which would at least give the two teenagers a chance at a happy ending.

However, would it be satisfactory for The End Of The F***ing World to let the two run off into the sunset together? It was a bittersweet finale for James, who believed he was a sociopath for a majority of the show, to finally love someone enough to sacrifice himself. Their relationship is a modern day tragedy, and part of the reason the series works so well is because of that gut-wrenching finale.

Yet, Netflix has been known to continue shows after the source material ends, so fans could be pretty confident that the streaming service wants to renew it. The End Of The F***ing World was a surprise hit for the streaming network similar to 13 Reasons Why or Jessica Jones, and both got renewals. If the writers are more than happy to return as creative advisors and the cast is on board to sign new contracts, then season two seems all but guaranteed.

At this point, it seems like The End Of The F***cking World is poised to return to the streaming service. It’s unclear whether both of the main characters will come back, and even if James doesn’t then Alyssa has plenty of drama to deal with. Does her mother finally prioritize her daughter? Will she throw James under the bus to save herself? There are a lot of storylines left to be explored in this weird but heartbreaking universe.

Of course, if The End Of The F***cking World gets a renewal, don’t expect the series to hit Netflix again until sometime in 2019 or later. The streaming service is known for spreading out all of its series to make viewers wait excruciating times to see their favorite characters return to screen. Luckily, fans will be able to hold themselves over by rewatching some of the most fascinating and complex characters in this modern era of television.
