Game of Thrones actor sets a mountainous world record
By Shawn Lealos
Fans of Game of Thrones knows how dominating of a presence that The Mountain is and the world of competitive weightlifting knows the actor who plays him well.
Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, also known as The Mountain on HBO’s Game of Thrones, took part in the Arnold Strongman Classic and set a new world record for the deadlift while there. Björnsson deadlifted almost half-a-ton, lifting 1,041 pounds.
The competition was the ROGUE Elephant Bar Deadlift and the Game of Thrones star broke the record originally held by Jerry Pritchett (1,031 pounds). Heading into this event, the man known as The Mountain posted on Instagram that he intended to break the record.
To really understand what lifting 1,041 pounds is like, that is the same as lifting a grand piano or three adult male Panda bears. It is also the equivalent of lifting 70 14-pound bowling balls at the same time.
It also isn’t the only record that the Game of Thrones star holds. In 2015, Björnsson broke a record at the Arnold Classic for throwing a 56-pound kettlebell 19-feet, three inches into the air.
Björnsson also broke the record later that same year for the keg toss. The record he set was for throwing a 33-pound keg over 24 feet into the air. On top of that, the Game of Thrones star also carried two refrigerators 20 meters in the shortest time.
It is no wonder Tywin Lannister said that no other knights bring about the fear in their enemies like The Mountain.
Next: Bran or Dany responsible for the end of Cersei?
Björnsson has also won Europe’s Strongest Man competition for the past two years. While Game of Thrones will end after one more season, it seems that the man known as The Mountain will have no problem finding something to do when the HBO show comes to an end.
