Matt Ryan wants to see Constantine and the Joker meet

Matt Ryan has become one of the most popular actors in the DC Universe, and he’s ready to expand the roster of characters he meets.

With his new animated Constantine show premiering on the CW Seed later this month, Ryan wants to see a familiar villain stop by. His expert demon-hunter has been challenged by a lot of criminals in his time, but he could be facing his biggest threat yet if Ryan gets his way.

Speaking with ScreenGeek, he discussed the idea of having the Joker run into Constantine and described how they would interact. It would definitely be interesting to see the Clown Prince of Crime go head-to-head with the snarky demon hunter. Their erratic nature could lead to some clever storylines between the two.

"“I always wondered how Constantine would be with the Joker. Most of the time when I think of John in a situation with the other heroes, I can kind picture what would happen. With the Joker, I don’t know. I love the way they wrote his interaction with Batman [in Justice League Dark]. There’s not a lot there in terms of dialogue, it’s just the one liners like calling him ‘Batsy’ and whatnot. Those little things. In a way, they’re kind of very similar, John and Batman/Bruce Wayne. I really like that dynamic, and what was [also] great about Justice League Dark was being able to play some of those relationships with characters that we didn’t get to on the show – even though it’s just a voice thing. It was really great to explore those dynamics. I’ve just got the Joker in my head now, though.”"

Justice League Dark is one of the many successful animated films in the DC Universe, and it definitely could be used as an example for more characters interacting with Constantine. However, Matt Ryan also acknowledged the two characters might have a lot in common. Could they be more friend than foe? Ryan definitely thinks it’s a possibility.

Matt Ryan speculated that Constantine and The Joker are more alike than the hero would prefer, calling them both “dark souls.” According to Ryan, Joker might even want to be friends with John but there is no way that Constantine’s soul would allow that to happen.

It’s unlikely to see any form of the Joker appearing on Legends of Tomorrow while Gotham currently has Jerome. However, it’s definitely possible for him to appear in the animated Constantine series. Only time will tell but the new show will appear on the CW Seed on March 24 following his adventures.
