Killing time till Game of Thrones: 6 shows to quench your thirst for intrigue
By Ruby LeRouge
If you’re like me, you are impatiently waiting for the next season of Game of Thrones to drop.
Will Cersei get her just desserts? will Bran warg the icy beast? Will Jon Snow take a knee next to a cradle? (All speculation, I assure you.)
Well, we have a long wait my friends, so in the meantime, here are 6 binge-worthy shows to tide you over till Game of Thrones.
Starz
Outlander (Starz)
Now with season 3 concluded, it’s the perfect time to catch up on this time traveling story into the age of Scottish clans, kings and battles. I admit I put off watching Outlander for a long while, thinking it was some sort of gushy romance, but oh how wrong I was, this show is high adventure.
Hot and steamy, brutal and bloody, Outlander is full of danger and depth. Based on the best selling book series by Diana Gabaldon, this Starz show is a must watch!
Amazon Video
Britannia (Amazon Video)
A new original show on Amazon Prime, Britannia is set in 43 A.D. Britain. The Romans invade a land ruled by tribal kings and queens appointed and manipulated by the will of the Druids. There is no Merlin here, these aren’t your storybook Arthurian Druids. Crowns and clans clash in a land of mystics and legends. With a great performance by David Morrissey of Walking Dead as the head of the Roman crusade to take Druid land, Britannia is full of political maneuvering and psychological warfare.
Starz
The White Queen (Starz)
You’ve seen The Tudors, you’ve seen 10 different renditions of Queen Elizabeth’s story, now it’s time to see what came before. It’s the war of the roses, a bloody clash between the house of Lancaster and the house of York, over who has the right to the English throne. A time of dirty deals and civil wars, who has the power and strength to take what’s theirs? Originally a Starz production, The White Queen is now available on Amazon Prime.
Starz
The White Princess (Starz)
In a world where nobles move their children like pieces on a chess board, this follow-up to The White Queen shows how the birth of the Tudor empire rose from a mother’s ruthless ambition and innocent blood. Alliances are rarely forged on peaceful grounds. Available on Amazon Prime.
Netflix
Borgia
Not to be mistaken with The Borgias with Jeremy Irons, Borgia is a Netflix original about the notorious family’s rise to power and the better of the two series in my opinion. The show stars John Doman as Rodrigo Borgia/Pope Alexander VI, patriarch to both his illegitimate family and the Catholic church.
Borgia’s lust for power and privilege knows no bounds, nor any other type of lust for that matter. Hell-bent on his family climbing to the highest positions in society, this pope will stop at nothing to succeed. Borgia is a tale of forbidden love, murder, greed, war and incest….sound familiar? History is the greatest source of inspiration, many parallels in this historical drama to our “love to hate” Lannisters in Game of Thrones.
Netflix
The Last Kingdom
Set in the 9th century, Danish Vikings have pillaged and conquered Anglo-Saxon lands. The Last Kingdom is the fight to protect the last standing Wessex stronghold. A tale of survival, war and torn loyalties. Last, but certainly not the least, The Last Kingdom on Netflix is definitely worth a watch.
