March has been a great month for fans of NBC’s Constantine.

Matt Ryan has officially carried the character over to Legends of Tomorrow full-time and his web series debuts today. The CW has given fans a glimpse of the upcoming series with a first look video. While it’s unclear how Constantine: City of Demons will exist in the larger Arrowverse, the series still looks promising.

A new behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming show sheds some light on the storyline it intends to follow. Loosely based off of the graphic novel, All His Engines, this will be the second attempt to adapt the infamous storyline.

The episode on NBC, “Quid Pro Quo,” was a similar story, which falls in line with comments by The CW. They said early on Constantine: City of Demons would tie into a story arc already introduced in the live-action show.

The storyline is pretty simple to follow: some form of dark magic to induce a coma-like state in its victims. Unfortunately, one of those affected people is Chas’ daughter making it personal for John.

In the behind-the-scenes look, there are a few large changes for fans to adapt to. For starters, Chas is now British compared to original NBC actor Charles Halford. This definitely raises the question about what universe Constantine: City of Demons exists in.

Like all of the other CW shows, fans assumed the new web series would be a part of the Arrowverse. However, if the live-action show is considered canon then this is a departure from the timeline.

Many viewers have noted the similarity between the animation here and in the movie Justice League Dark. This could be a hint that Constantine: City of Demons is actually part of the larger DC animated library.

Of course, the easier answer is that this version of Constantine exists in a different world. The Arrowverse has consistently used the fifty-three different Earths and confusing timelines to explain plot inconsistencies.

Even if the web series only exists as a standalone offering, fans will be happy to see the character again. It arrives on the CW Seed today, and Matt Ryan can also be seen on the season finale of Legends of Tomorrow.
