Marvel’s New Warriors show will be a ‘docu-comedy’

Marvel’s New Warriors show might not have found a home yet but the comic book giant seems confident it will.

Writer Fabian Nicieza shed some light on the direction of the television adaptation. Initially developed to be a 30-minute comedy — Nicieza says the show is more of a “docu-comedy.”

When speaking with SYFY, he had some interesting information about New Warriors.

From his statements, the series actually sounds a lot different than its comic book origin or what fans expected.

"“The TV thing is not the original comics thing; it is its own entity, and my desire is for it to be as good as it can possibly be for what it is. And what it is is a half-hour dramedy, comedy docu-comedy show about a young group of 20-somethings living in a house, pretending to be superheroes.”"

This seems like more of an origin story compared to the original comic book line. However, it is reminiscent of the third volume form the New Warriors comic.

A few new members join the team and they star in a reality show which highlights their inexperience. The description definitely sounds difficult to keep going for a multiple season arc.

Nicieza’s run in the New Warriors is still the longest-running for the title. While he seems to have some apprehensions regarding the adaptation, he remains open to the TV series.

"“What I think is the core underlying ethos of New Warriors that made my run so successful and that others struggled with was the strident, passionate, and relatively immature perspective the young bring to seek change in the world. There has to be an element of anger and passion to that, which infused the original series. There also has to be an element of positive aspiration to it, too, because they’re supposed to be good people who just don’t know enough about the world yet. I hope they use those elements in the TV show, because then, to me, it’s the brand of New Warriors. If they don’t, it will be other iterations that Marvel published, and there’s a reason those didn’t succeed: because it lacked the core DNA.”"

He makes a very good point, many of the best superhero shows have been more light-hearted. The first season of The Flash and Supergirl quickly won over fans with their optimism. While Marvel’s TV series have been more mature, it would be nice to see them embrace a positive tone.
