Kate Walsh joins Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy in a recurring role

Kate Walsh is jumping from 13 Reasons Why to another Netflix adaptation.

Deadline reports the esteemed actress has been tapped to join The Umbrella Academy in a recurring role. Kate Walsh is just one of many esteemed actresses in the growing cast for the graphic novel adaptation.

The Umbrella Academy will be based on the comics by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá which follows a family of superheroes. The siblings are dysfunctional, and a bit weird, but must come together to face common threats. Ellen Page, Robert Sheehan, Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, David Castañeda, and Aidan Gallagher make up the Hargreeves family. While Kate Walsh probably won’t be joining the family anytime soon, her character will have some run-ins with the group.

Not much is known about her role, but Walsh will be playing someone known as “The Handler”. Her character is the leader of a secretive organization and has all the qualities to scare the average person. Described as “composed and confident,” she is the kind of person that most people would rather have as an ally than an enemy. Nevertheless, she oozes charm and charisma which tricks a lot of people into trusting her.

Recently known for her emotionally heart-wrenching performance on 13 Reasons Why Kate Walsh will get to play an entirely different character here. As one of the standout performers on her other Netflix show, it’s satisfying to know she’s making the leap to another series on the streaming network. She joins Mary J. Blige, who also joins The Umbrella Academy after her performance in Mudbound.

The series isn’t expected to debut until sometime in 2019, but the loyal fan base from the comics are already excited. Jeremy Slater is writing the pilot, but Gerard Way will be an executive producer.  Steve Blackman, an executive producer from Legion and Fargo, will be taking over as a showrunner.

Every piece of news about The Umbrella Academy makes the show look even more promising. Kate Walsh is a fantastic grab for the adaptation, and will undoubtedly bring a lot to the role. While waiting to hear more, fans should be sure to watch her in season two of 13 Reasons Why.
