The Gifted is expanding its cast for season two with a new addition to the ensemble.

Empire‘s Grace Byers is suiting up for the upcoming season of The Gifted as a new mutant joining the team. According to Deadline, the actress has booked a recurring role as an ally to the Hellfire Club.

Byers’ character is named Reeva and she’s described as “a smart, charming, authoritative, elegant, beautiful woman who is ruthless in her efforts to fight for her people.” It’s easy to see why the Hellfire Club would be interested in recruiting her. On paper, she sounds similar to Skyler Samuel’s Stepford Cuckoos.

Comic book readers might recognize the name “Reeva” because there was a member of the Hellfire Club in the comics called Reeva Payge. The Gifted has often chosen to highlight mutant characters who will never get their due in the movies, and this is probably another instance. In the comics, she has the power of mental distortion, which ultimately allows her to mess with people’s minds.

Seen throughout the first season, almost everyone is distrustful of the Cuckoo’s because they’re telepaths. Reeva will undoubtedly spook people as well with her ability to distort one’s perception. FOX released a statement about Byers’ character and it definitely seems like she’ll be trouble for the Mutant Underground.

"“She leads an elite band of followers and has a soft spot for her new recruits but is still capable of extreme violence in defense of her vision.”"

Not much is known about the second season of The Gifted other than the different mutant factions. However, Reeva might be able to shake things up with both the Underground and the Hellfire club. In the comics, the latter is consistently plagued by infighting. Polaris is going to have to prove herself as the rightful heir to the group throughout season two.
