It was announced previously that Adrian Holmes and Jacky Lai were also cast on the show.

Based on a book of prose stories detailing the first Vampire War, which was released by IDW Publishing, V-Wars centers on Somerhalder’s character Dr. Luther Swann.

After Swann’s best friend Michael Frayne (Holmes) contracts a disease that turns him into a vampire, Swann attempts to find a cure. Meanwhile, society crumbles as normal humans fight against the vampires, who Fayne rises up to lead.

This is Somerhalder’s second turn in a vampire story. He is well-known for his leading role as the vampire Damon Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries. In V-Wars he’s switching to the human’s side.

Nonetheless, Somerhalder’s inclusion in another vampire show will likely be a big draw for many fans to the 10-episode Netflix series.

However, V-Wars looks to be less teen vampire romance and more gritty horror. The series appears to be more grounded in science, with its emphasis on the disease and contagion aspects of vampirism.

The pilot of the series will be directed by Brad Turner (24, Wayward Pines, The Shannara Chronicles), who will also serve as executive producer. As previously reported, Glenn Davis and William Laurin, who also created and executive produced the show Aftermath, will be the series’ showrunners.
