MC Mayans will do one thing Sons of Anarchy never did

MC Mayans will have one thing that the original series, Sons of Anarchy did not have–flashbacks.

MC Mayans had a huge presence at San Diego Comic-Con this year ahead of its series premiere in September. In an interview with Deadline, co-creator Kurt Sutter revealed something unique about MC Mayans.

Sutter and the team of writers never included a flashback scene in SOA but he plans to bring that aspect of storytelling into the new series to give more depth to the main character,  Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes, who is being played by J.D. Pardo.

"“One of the cool things about [Mayans] is we do something we never did on Sons. We never had a flashback on Sons, because I felt like it pulled you out of the world. But because of who EZ is, and the way his brain works, it’s organic to this show.”"

Although SOA often referred to a past before Charlie Hunnam’s iconic character Jax Teller, there were never any scenes showing the past. Sutter hopes that he can create a prequel series about how Jax’s father went on to establish the Sons of Anarchy with Piney (William Lucking).

Sutter mentioned speaking to the chief of FX about creating a prequel series, and while that may be a couple years down the line, it would be the third chapter surrounding this story. It would only be ten episodes because he doesn’t see it as a series that would go much past that.

There may be a potential fourth series that would include the survivors of SOA.

"“Jax didn’t destroy all those copies of John Teller’s manuscript, and at some point, maybe down the line we have [Drea de Matteo’s] character [Wendy Case] still out there with the boys, we have Jimmy Smit’s character [Nero] still out there. At some point perhaps there’ll be a brother story with [Jax’s sons] Able and Thomas, coming back to Charming. Where it all began. If I’m still alive, that might be the last chapter.”"

The new series will focus on the character of EZ who initially planned on living a nice, comfortable life in the U.S. but the violence surrounding the cartel mucks up his plans. Very quickly, he comes a potential prospect for the Mayans MC and has to prove himself to the Charter President, played by Emilio Rivera.

Other cast members include Edward James Olmos as EZ’s father; Jacqueline Obradors as EZ’s mother; Clayton Cardenas as EZ’s brother; and Richard Cabral as El Choco.

MC Mayans will pick up about three years after the events that unfolded in SOA and is set to premiere September 4th on FX!
