An unexpected source has teased a potential upcoming fifth season of Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the infamous detective and Martin Freeman as his right-hand man, Dr. Watson.

Chris Georgiou, the owner of Speedy’s Sandwich Bar & Cafe, the real-life restaurant featured in exterior shots of Sherlock’s apartment, hinted to Time Out that the show may return soon.

Georgiou is quoted as saying,

"I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but I’ve heard they’ll be coming back for a fifth season."

While the source of Georgiou’s information isn’t clear, according to comicbook.com, in addition to appearing of the show, his restaurant has provided refreshments for the production and he has become close to people involved with the show.

Fans have been wondering about a fifth season of Sherlock ever since the fourth season was broadcast in early 2017. Of course, a new season would hinge on the availability of the lead actors as well as series creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.

Among other projects, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been keeping both Cumberbatch and Freeman busy. Cumberbatch plays Doctor Strange and Freeman plays Agent Ross in the sprawling film series.

Meanwhile, Moffat and Gatiss are working on a new adaptation of the novel Dracula. It was also just announced that HBO has given a straight-to-series order to Moffat’s adaption of The Time Traveler’s Wife.

Given all their different commitments, syncing up everyone’s schedules to write, film, and edit another season of Sherlock could be a challenge.

The major players involved have always said they intend to return to the show — at least at some point. So the question of a fifth season seems to be more about when than if.
