HBO joins forces with BBC for His Dark Materials series
Logan breakout star Dafne Keen leads the 16-episode series, His Dark Materials, which is adapted from Philip Pullman’s fantasy novel trilogy.
HBO has signed on to co-produce and distribute BBC’s upcoming series His Dark Materials, according to Deadline. Bad Wolf, which HBO partially owns, and New Line Cinema will also produce. The show has been ordered to two eight-episode seasons, which will air on BBC in the UK and on HBO outside of the UK.
The series is based on Philip Pullman’s award-winning and highly popular young-adult fantasy novel trilogy His Dark Materials, composed of Northern Lights (known in the U.S. as The Golden Compass), The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.

Dafne Keen, best known for Logan, stars as Lyra Belacqua. According to Deadline, the 13-year-old protagonist embarks on a dark adventure in search of a kidnapped friend that leads her to new worlds and dangerous secrets, including “a sinister plot involving stolen children.”
The series also stars James McAvoy (as Lord Asriel Belacqua), Lin-Manuel Miranda (as Lee Scoresby) and Ruth Wilson (as Mrs. Coulter). While Wilson is well-known for her work on the small screen and Miranda has guest-starred on numerous popular series, His Dark Materials will mark McAvoy’s first live-action television appearance in over a decade.
The series is written by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and directed by Tom Hooper (Les Misérables). Thorne and Hooper, as well as Pullman, are executive producing alongside Carolyn Blackwood, Toby Emmerich, Deborah Forte, Julie Gardner, Ben Irving, Dan McCulloch, Jane Tranter, and Piers Wenger.
Rounding out the ensemble cast are Anne-Marie Duff, Clarke Peters, Ariyon Bakare, Will Keen (Dafne Keen’s father), Ian Gelder, Georgina Campbell, Lucian Msamati, James Cosmo, Ruta Gedmintas, Mat Fraser, Geoff Bell, Simon Manyonda, Lewin Lloyd, Daniel Frogson and Tyler Howitt.
