Hulu’s The Act has cast Calum Worthy to star opposite Patrica Arquette and Joey King in its first season.

Calum Worthy, known for Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally, American Vandal, and Liberty Crossing, has been cast in a major role in Hulu’s upcoming true-crime anthology series The Act. Worthy will play Nick, a young Catholic man who meets Joey King’s Gypsy on a Christian dating website. Patricia Arquette plays Gypsy’s suffocating mother Dee Dee.

The Act is Hulu’s new character-based true-crime seasonal anthology series created by writers Nick Antosca and Michelle Dean. There are so many descriptors used in the telling of the series genre that I’m curious how all those elements are going to be put into use. The series is designed to tell bizarre, stranger-than-fiction true crime stories and Antosca and Dean seem like the perfect team to tell them.

Antosca is the writer, showrunner, and executive producer for SyFy’s horror anthology series Channel Zero – now in its fourth season – along with being a horror novelist and a former writer and co-producer for Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal (you know that last episode of season three? Yeah, he wrote that one.). He is sufficiently twisted enough to put the ghastly source material to good use. Meanwhile, Dean is an award-winning journalist and critic who can bring a documentarians eye to the true crime material. Her first book, Sharp: The Women Who Made an Art of Having an Opinion, was released this year.

Next. The Act: Chloe Sevigny & AnnaSophia Robb cast in Hulu true-crime series. dark

Season one will be based on Dean’s 2016 Buzzfeed article “Dee Dee Wanted Her Daughter To Be Sick, Gypsy Wanted Her Mom To Be Murdered,” a story that details a daughter’s toxic relationship with her mother that eventually leads to murder. There is no news yet about when The Act is expected to be released. Chloe Sevigny and AnnaSophia Robb also star.
